Tons of “Malangsi” fish or small sardines washed offshore in Tagoloan and Villanueva

Misamis Oriental— Residents were surprised upon seeing loads of dead fish washed on the seacoast of Tagoloan and Villanueva last Sunday, February 21, 2021.

One of them who witnessed the said incident stated that it was around 3 to 4 in the morning when he noticed the fishes jumping into the sand. The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Region X (BFAR) investigated the case and said that the estimated number of fish washed on the sands is about 2,500 kilograms.

The size of the fish is about 1 to 3 inches. (size of a juvenile stage “tamban.”) According to them, the current of the water on that day is strong due to the typhoon (Auring). Thus, a lot of fish were affected and big waves led them to the shore.

Some residents went to harvest the dead fish. However, BFAR posted an advisory saying that it is not advised to consume, harvest, collect, and sell the fish as the investigation of the said incident is still pending. Thus, LGU should dispose of the fish that were affected. The advisory was posted on their Facebook page. Read the advisory below.

Netizens also shared their reactions regarding the incidents online. Some say that it's a blessing while others say it's a curse.

Sardines are known sensitive to water temperatures. They usually traveled in a group or school. Sardines prefer deep waters where the temperature is cool. Meanwhile, the temperature of the Tagoloan river on that day where the sardines were found is cold.
