Environmental Sustainability

Rather than overpowering nature or limiting human impact, good design will affirm the possibility of developing healthy and creatively interactive relationships between human settlements and the natural world.

– William McDonough and Michael Braungart from Building Like Trees, Cities Like Forests

If I were asked, how important is sustainability to us and our environment? Earnestly? It’s of paramount importance, a subject we must all acknowledge and add to our concerns. Living on this planet for two decades is quite a miracle for me. Imagine how hard this planet has endured sustaining all the human necessities, in fact not just necessities but including the human wants. Natural resources are our means for survival, however, we, humans have developed unlimited wants more than the basic needs, and it's quite alarming as the resources are just limited. According to researches and statistics, the human population has vastly increased over the centuries which is why consumers and consumption also increases.

Based on research entitled "Green Accounting for Sustainable Economy" from a Philippine Statistics Authority government website, the Philippine economy seems to be on an - economically - sustainable path, however, there were risks of violating environmental thresholds or standards. Instances such as erosion of agricultural lands, destructive fishing, environmental quality degradation, air and water pollution, habitat destruction, deforestation, and many other illegal activities became factors that challenge sustainability in the country.

The Philippines is widely known for its natural resources, hence our country has been blessed and rich in agriculture. By all means, agriculture has been the primary contributor to our economy, thus eradicating illegal activities and focusing on developing sustainability should be the utmost priority. As per an article from The Manila Times, it is an essential segment to networks', town', urban communities' and countries' sustainable development since its goal is to establish climate cordial, tough, and reformist plans that are helpful to individuals and the climate while advancing sociocultural and comprehensive financial turn of events. Therefore, rather than focusing on finding another planet to inhabit, we must create concrete and sustainable solutions to problems like environmental sustainability, which is sadly our only means of survival.

On top of that, I certainly believe that to live in a harmonious environment, our planet must have equilibrium in all aspects. We must always give back to what we take rather than seize everything for granted. It's not only to show gratitude to our planet but also in consideration for the next generations to come. We shouldn't be burdensome in our home. Let us be the caretaker, and nurture it both in love and prosperity.
