Updated: Mar 3, 2021

A strange phenomenon occurs on coastal barangays of San Roque, Sta. Cruz, Carmen Annex, and Triunfo, Ozamis City, alarm the residents upon seeing the seawater turn into a blood-like color last Sunday, February 21, 2021.

According to the residents, they noticed a foul odor emitting from the seawater. After receiving a complaint, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Region X, immediately take action to the said incident.

During the press conference, BFAR shared the results after examining the water. According to them, a certain type of plankton (Algal blooms of Phytoplanktons) was present in the water caused the seawater to turn red. Meanwhile, BFAR advised the residents not to harvest, sell, and eat all kinds of shellfish. Read the advisory below.

Seawater color became normal again. However, local authorities including the maritime police and the Department of Energy and Natural Resources (DENR), are still monitoring the waters in Ozamiz.

Meanwhile, the photos shared online caught the attention of the netizens and create a debate between a natural phenomenon and the Bible prophecy.

Red tide happens when the population of algae explodes, creating an "algal bloom.” When millions of these algae reproduce and cluster in one area, they can change the color of the water. The color will usually turn into a rusty shade of red.
