Earth Day 2021 Films Review

Just yesterday, April 22, 2021, AYEJ has prepared 3 short films for the earth and film lovers from across the globe, with Earth Day theme, #RestoreOurEarth. As we battle fighting the negative changes of our mother earth. These films will remind us of how important it is to take care of the world we live in.

1. Creamen by Esther Casas Roura

The Short Film Creamen is about a colorful and symbolic story about Global Warming, which brings together different characters who are forced to confront the challenges of a bad future.

Themes: Environmental, Global Warming, Life and Health

Besides the fact that this film is made to represent the Earth, the themes Life, and Heath. As the film starts, everything was all fine and everyone was doing their things and bragging. The longer the film goes, the creamen slowly are faced with challenges that slowly affected them and even the people around who are buying ice cream. The creamen could represent the various people, and the heat could be the challenge all could face. People no matter what race or gender face a lot of the same problems. An example is a depression. People just have different ways to deal with problems.

Health because in the end, people die. And no matter what anyone does no one can stop that. When one is young they can do almost anything like the kids in the film. But as time passes and the older you get it becomes harder to move and have health problems.

The film was fun to watch and I know it took a lot to make this production. It was not the usual thing to watch for me but that was entertaining. At first, I was confused on how to interpret but I somehow understood at least some of the things the film tried to picture. The film showed nothing new but still a very important message. The earth is heating up and it may be too late to do anything. We should be more earth-friendly because, at the end of the day, we are the ones who are inhabiting the planet. So we are the ones greatly affected when it dies. The Philippines can relate to this in the sense that our temperature is getting higher day by day. We should be more earth-friendly, well informed as well as being cooperative with the nature-related projects done to lessen trash and other sources that could rise our temperatures. Being informed isn’t enough to help. We should do our part as inhabitants of this amazing yet sick planet.

2. EMBER by Celeste Jamneck

The short film EMBER is about the start of a fire in the area where Mbali, a nature sprite is currently taking care of. Even with all the efforts, the Mbali did to save the plants, everything was burnt and turned to ashen by Ember. Yet in the end, a flower sprouted in which Mbali helped multiply as Ember watches with content as he crumbles down to ashes.

Themes: Environmental, Hope, Life

The film although environment-related could mean life. Life and hope because the slowly dying of the plant could interpret as the challenges being faced. The explosion could be the loss of control of the situation no matter how hard one tries to control it. And at the end where the plants start growing could mean the rise once again. Because no matter what struggles and hardships one faces, with time everything eventually gets better. There is always hope at the end of a chapter, and another problem when another begins.

The film shows hope. And even at your lowest, a miracle can still happen. Even the villains of the story can bring one hope. All have reasons to do a certain thing and all have unexpected results. One must experience hardship to feel happy in the end.

In the Philippines, I haven’t recently heard of forest fires that have caused major burns in forests. But we must not wait for such things to happen. It is bound to happen because this country’s temperature rises almost every day. We should be aware of the possibilities before anything bad happened so that we can be prepared at all times.

3. SUMER by Alvaro Garcia

The short film SUMER is about a time where the Earth has weakened due to the results of the last century, which made the entire ecosystem collapse.

Themes: Hope, Rebellion

With the years to come and the more we abuse the planet, I fear that there is a possibility that this may happen. The film as scary as it may seem may be a prediction of a future where the air is hard to get. We abuse the free things we have and as result, we may slowly have lesser and lesser as years pass by. It is scary to think that plants and animals are no longer an existing thing to such a future. The film shows hope for the future generation, even though the world has died. The film for me shows rebellion for the beliefs of many who think the world has completely died. But as the kid grows curious he finds out there is hope. Even through his struggles by rebelling against the beliefs of others, he managed to find hope for all through his struggles.

I like this film among the three I have seen. It wasn’t the best in graphics, yes, but it had a message I easily could connect to. It was scary yet it brought hope to all. There was barely any script but it was enough to portray the story perfectly.

It is scary to think of a future like this. The Philippines even with some areas still green as ever, still have areas that have no greenery at all. I am lucky to live far away from such an area but it is still scary how people ignore what is happening to the country. Rules should be implemented to help clean and maintain the cleanest of our country. I hope for such a law which is stricter in the future to come.
